Primary School Launches Campaign To Recruit New Lollypop Person

Junior Road Safety Officers at Malin Bridge Primary School have launched a campaign to help Sheffield City Council recruit a new School Crossing Patrol Warden on Dykes Lane outside the school’s main entrance.
The Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs), a group of Year 6 students taking part in the South Yorkshire-wide scheme, have been working hard to find ways of supporting the City Council to recruit somebody to the position.
They've been busy creating posters to put up in community spaces and are looking at ways they can spread their message further using social media. They also recently completed their latest project "Be Bright - Be Seen" which culminated in a Be Bright Be Seen non-uniform day to highlight to their peers the importance of wearing bright clothing to be visible to motorists.
School Crossing Patrol Wardens are dedicated individuals who help keep children and their families safe on their journeys to and from school. They are an important part of encouraging active travel by children and their parents.
No formal qualifications are needed, but you must be fit enough to carry the stop sign, to see and hear traffic, and to walk briskly into and out of the road safely using an awareness of road safety during a shift. The Council also provides full training and a weatherproof uniform.
Caroline Davies, Teacher and Project Lead for Junior Road Safety Officers at Malin Bridge Primary School, said, “School Crossing Guards are really important as we have lots of children entering and exiting the school at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day and our key priority is to keep them as safe as possible.”
“At the moment we don’t have anybody to assist them crossing the road at the front entrance. We’re on the brow of a hill and it’s very, very busy at drop-off and pick-up time so we really need somebody out here to keep children safe during those peak times.”

Michelle, the School Crossing Patrol Warden who has patrolled the roads to the rear of the school for ten years, said, “I’ve seen the kids go from little ones to big ones and I enjoy it every day. It was ideal for me, and it fits in with my daily life. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”
Kai, one of the JRSOs, said, “It's getting really dark at these times, so people could get run over. So, we need someone to make sure no one gets hurt and then we keep the road safe around school.”

If you are reliable, confident and have a positive attitude, then the School and the Council would love for you to apply to join the friendly team of School Crossing Patrol Wardens.
Applications for the role close on 8 December 2025. Find out more about the role and apply on the Sheffield City Council website at: https://bit.ly/ProjectLollypop2025
